Driver-less Car is good
for Human
The modern era can be said to be
the technology and innovation age. The rapid advancements in the technological sector has made life easy for human beings. Work has become easier,
communication faster thus making the world a small village. Scientists and
technologists are working hard to innovate as well as improve the available
technology to make life easier. Driver-less
car is just one of the innovations that is
aimed at making the human daily life easier. The purpose of this essay is to
discuss this innovation and how it can benefit the humankind.
Driver-less car
A driver-less car is standard
passenger car that has additional capabilities to replace a driver by an
intelligence autonomous system to control it. This car is installed with GPS
receivers and mapping technologies to aid it in navigating paths as well as
destinations. In general, the driver-less
car is installed with the modern technology that enables it to navigate through
the paths without any accidents.
Current use
Despite the advancements in the
technology, driver-less cars are not common and they have not been released for
public use. All car makers are in a race to test their prototypes to see if they
are fit for the market.
Advantages of driver-less car
Driver-less car has many benefits
over the driver cars. For instance, the driver-less cars promote autonomy due to
their driving will that is autonomous. This implies that passengers can
independently use them even if they do not have knowledge on driving. The
beneficiaries of this independence will include; elderly people, children and
people with disabilities that hinder them from driving. Particularly, the blind
will be able to run errands without necessarily requiring a helper in terms of
a driver. Accordingly, a passenger is only required to press the start button
after settling in the car to allow it to drive. This is attributed to the fact
that the driver-less cars have driver-assistance features that enable them to act as motorists. Consequently, this will enable
them to relax as they journey and arrive at their destination feeling less
stressed.
For a fact, driver-less cars are a
product of technology which is constantly evolving. They utilize modern tech
such as a touchscreen kiosk, the driver-less cars are able to deliver. As such,
utilizing these cars implies that people are embracing the dynamic technology.
This is an essential part of human life since individuals are required to be
open to change. In essence, driver-less cars would usher in a new era that will
find normality in this technology product that is currently viewed as odd.
Moreover, the driver-less cars will provide employment opportunities for other
entrepreneurs. New car makers (such as Google) would be interested in the
business and all of them will strive to achieve better driver-less cars by
advancing their software products and services. In turn, the existing car makers
will also have to shift to manufacturing advanced similar products. As a
result, there would be healthy
competition in the market and this would result in
more advanced driver-less cars. Consequently, there would be a variety of
quality options at the consumers’ disposal.
Additionally, driver-less cars will give car ownership a valid meaning. Currently, the cars
which require drivers have to spend much of their time on the parking lot.
Despite the high prices which most of them cost, the cars are not used often. However,
driver-less cars will be available to their owners and other users for up to 75%
utilization. This is because passengers will have access to cars anytime they
need it. Hence, passengers can summon the driver-less cars and use them at their
own convenience. In this regard, there would be a need for fewer driver-less cars to enable people to move around. Accordingly, this will reduce the
number of cars operating on the roads and ultimately reduce or completely eliminate
traffic.
The driver-less cars will ensure
maximum mobility to most people using fewer options. Given that self-driving
cars move in fleets, they have a high possibility of doing away with other
public means of transport such as a taxi.
According to research, the fleet of driver-less cars will eliminate about 85% of
the cars with drivers by making them appear less reliable. For instance; one
autonomous self-driving taxi would be able to conveniently replace the service
of about 10 private vehicles. In essence, this saves on the cost of fuel that
would have otherwise been spent on the 10 private vehicles. It would also save
on land that would have otherwise been allocated as a parking lot. Instead of such land being a “waste” it would be put to better use. Moreover, reducing the number of
cars with drivers would reduce pollution on roads and thus, create a clean
environment.
Another advantage of the driver-less
cars is that they promote safety for their passengers. This type of cars tends
to provide a safe and secure environment for traveling
since they are less prone to human error. Contrary, the cars with drivers are
prone to accidents, most of which are a result of human error. For instance, the
drivers are prone to careless drinking of alcohol and driving, exceeding the speed limit and being distracted with text
messages or phone calls. Luckily, such human distractions are not available in
the case of driver-less vehicles. In return, there would be fewer road accidents
and resulting deaths. Moreover, the use of driver-less cars will eliminate the need for taxi drivers. This will cut down on
expenses that would have otherwise been incurred when hiring a taxi driver. Additionally, it would save on time that would
have otherwise been spent on bus stations and or parking lots waiting for taxis.
However, the driver-less cars also
have some disadvantages. Some of them are it would result in loss of employment
for some existing car makers, vehicle insurance providers and taxi operators.
The cars will also reduce the income gained by dealers in the vehicle
insurance. This would be a big loss given that the insurance industry has
gained about $198 billion over recent time. Moreover, it would be a big blow to
car-lovers who identify with cars as icons of their personal freedom. The good
news is that these disadvantages are less than the numerous advantages that
come with the technology. Furthermore, with the advancing technology, they
stand a chance to be addressed accordingly.
Conclusion
The benefits of driver-less cars
outweigh the disadvantages that the technological product brings about.
Driver-less cars would; create new opportunities to car makers, make traveling easy and convenient and also give car
ownership a valid meaning. Given that it is a part of the dynamic technological
process with benefits, driver-less cars have to be embrace.
